Buh ha ha!
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
“That sounds like a good idea…….”-“Is there something bothering you with the idea?”-“No, the idea is GOOD…..🙂”
Can someone explain this to me?
Old people use quotation marks to indicate emphasis, as a substitute for italics (which many of them could not produce on the old typewriters they learned to write on), whereas young people use them to indicate sarcasm or falseness. They’re used as “scare quotes”.
And old people use ellipses simply to indicate a pause, or for some other incomprehensible reason I’m not aware of. But young people use ellipses to indicate passive-aggression.
So an old person could type something like:
how are things going with your “boyfriend”….
and what they mean is
How are things going with your boyfriend? [Im so excited for you, sweetie, and I wanna hear about it]
But a young person would interpret that sentence as
How are things going with your so-called boyfriend…. [I say, while seething with contempt for him and possibly for you too]
The linguistic difference across generations is beautifully explained here thank you
Oh ho HO let’s see what villainy is afoot today *opens up the 1891 London Illustrated Police News*
Ah yes, “The Illustrated Police News”, Daily Mail / Express * (or possibly Sunday Sport / National Enquirer) of its day
* Mail & Express are
famousnotorious for, when at a loose end, publishing Madeline McCann / Lady Diana stories despite their increasing lack of currency. In much the same way, IPN published nearly 200 Jack the Ripper front-page stories in the four years after those murders ended. Illustrated stories, of course. Also like them, IPN featured many anti-immigrant “here to take your jobs” stories.
IPN got good mileage from murder (mostly horrible, sometimes ghastly, occasionally just shocking), violent or scandalous goings-on (with illustrations to show how violently scandalous) and things to be outraged at (with illustrations to assist in being outraged…)
It was also partial to the adjective “fair”…
…and I was quite surprised that this one missed out on “fair somnambulist”.
The captions didn’t miss out on much else.
Stuff like these:
Or indeed these:
Has there ever been a compilation of The Best / Worst Of Illustrated Police News?
I’d buy it for the chuckle factor. ;-P
Yeah quiet quitting is great and all but have you tried chaotic working?
Like. I remember back in my grocery store cashier days I did so much crazy shit.
When WIC (Women, infants, and children voucher program to help low income mothers/families with children) people were in my line I would pretty much know who they were. Before the cards they had to tell us upfront they were WIC and show us their vouchers for what they were allowed to get (it was awful some times. Like. 2 gallons of milk. $4 worth of vegetables etc etc). They’d always have items hanging back, waiting to see what the total was and if they would have to take it off the belt.
I began to place the fruits/vegetables a certain way on the register scale so that like 1/2lbs of grapes read as like .28lbs or something. Then act shocked when I said that they still had X amount of lbs left. They got all their fruit and vegetables.
I think it started to kinda? Catch on to the women? Because I would have the same moms in my line month after month. And even after they switched to the cards (they worked like food stamp cards?) I’d still do the same thing. They were able to get more produce for whatever shitty max amount Indiana gave them.
Anyways. Be chaotic. It’s more fun that way.
Tired of love stricken mortals making up a sizable chunk of the underworld’s traffic, Hades decides to help mortals with their love problems before Aphrodite can answer them. It turns out that mortals are a lot more satisfied with Hades’ help than with Aphrodite’s.
I’ve seen a lot of fics disappear from my bookmarks, some 10+ years old, because they were added to an unrevealed collection. It makes me wonder if people realize what your fic being added to a collection actually means and if the authors approved it automatically without realizing what would happen.
If someone adds your fic to their collection, they can hide it! They can mark the collection as unrevealed and your fic will be unreadable to anyone other than them! If you’re writing works for a surprise event, like a Secret Santa, this is really nice.
But if you’re just writing and someone adds your fic to a collection for their own personal use and marks it as unrevealed, that… really sucks.
I bookmarked this fic in 2017, almost 5 years ago. Knowing me, the fic itself was probably at least a couple years old at the time I bookmarked it.
This is a 5+ year old fic that is completely inaccessible now because it was added to a collection that, as far as I can tell, is literally just for the collection owner’s own reference. There’s almost 30 fics in the collection, all of them unrevealed.
Please don’t blindly accept collection requests and if your works ARE in a collection, make sure that they aren’t being hidden without your knowledge or consent.
Are you able to remove a work from collection after you allow it or is it just a story that’s just fucked?
Yes, you can remove your works! From the faq:
If you’re the creator of the work:
1) Select the “Edit” button from the work’s page and scroll down to the “Associations” section.
2) Select the red (×) beside the collection name you want to remove next to “Post to Collections / Challenges”.
3) Select “Post” to apply the change. The work will be immediately removed from the collection.
I’m not sure if you get an alert if your fic is marked as unrevealed though, so keep an eye on the collections that your works are part of.
There’s also an option in your preferences to accept collection invitations automatically. I would highly recommend making sure that that option is not selected.
I realize this might be a dirty trick pro-censorship fandom harassers might try to pull on some people, so yeah.
Boosting for visibility.
today the supreme court has ruled that businesses are allowed to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community, in addition to taking steps to dismantle affirmative action. absolutely sick to my stomach right now. generations of progress gone within a day. on the last day of pride month they had to get their last fucking laugh huh?
“Remember, if you die in the simulation-” “Yeah, yeah, we know, you die in real life.” “What? No! You need to reset the simulation with this terminal! What is WRONG with you humans?!”
I’ve got several issues with the proposed Tumblr blackout, but chief among them is the fact that it lands on the first day of Disabled Pride Month and the fact that there are people calling for it to become indefinite when disabled folks already have limited access to their communities, and many of us are losing what little reliable access we have because of places like Reddit going dark.
Like… idk. Maybe I’m being uncharitable. But the prioritization of ensuring Pride is minimally interfered with while the first day of Disability Pride is just taken away is rubbing me the wrong way.
And just to be clear. I don’t think anyone is doing it intentionally. But I also think that’s the problem. No one thinks about disabled people except other disabled people. I wish they would.
I have a chronic illness and I didnt even know there was a Disabled Pride Month.
We even have a flag which @capricorn-0mnikorn created.
So welcome to your first Disability Pride. I know it’s technically tomorrow, but it’s never too early to find out you have a community and be welcomed by it :)

You managed to retire from the supervillain game long ago, when you became a parent. Now, your grandchild has inadvertently been kidnapped by an upstart villain, and you’re about to show them why the world (rightfully) feared you.
